The Curious Things a Mystery Writer Researches

Posted

At one of my book club visits, someone asked how much research goes into writing a mystery. Actually, quite a bit. And a lot of it has nothing to do with murder.

For example, recently I’ve been researching dollhouse furnishings. Miniature chairs, tables, magazines, and books, and their different sizes. Why would I need to know that? Hopefully, you’ll find out next year when my novel-in-process gets published (fingers crossed).

Then there’s geography. Both Misery Cove and my new mystery take place in fictional Michigan lakeside towns. But I still need to know how far apart they are and how long it takes to drive between them. A murder suspect’s alibi might depend on it.

I’ve also spent more time than you’d think deciding where my characters live. A house, a condo, or an apartment? How big is it? What’s its layout? What would someone see from the living room window? Why did the character choose to live there? What does it say about them?

Even choosing characters’ names can be a fun challenge. I want names that fit their personalities and are age appropriate. For example, I’m unlikely to name a one-hundred-year-old woman Jennifer. Sometimes, a name that seemed perfect when I started writing just doesn’t feel right a few chapters later. My killer’s name has changed a few times already, but I think it’s solid now (fingers crossed again).

Of course, there’s the more conventional research into police procedures, legal matters, and forensic investigations. But it’s often the little things that send me searching for answers.

Research is my second favorite thing about being an author, after talking with readers.

Where I’ll Be

I’ve enjoyed meeting readers at book clubs and events this year, and I have a few more appearances coming up.
